Rick Destito knew exactly what he was getting into when he bought a rundown, three-story Victorian house in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Syracuse. Built in the 1890s but left abandoned for years, the place was in serious disrepair: graffiti and mold stained the exterior, the windows were gone and the roof needed to be replaced. But under an innovative local housing program, he paid only a dollar for the place — plus another $60,000, and his own skilled labor, to make it suitable for his family, including a one-year old girl and a baby on the way.

Syracuse Alumni spend night on Broadway to see HAIR

On a Wednesday night in January, a group of 20 Syracuse Alumni spent a night out on Broadway! With a mixture of ages, members and non-members of the Big Apple Orange, everyone enjoyed the Tony Award winning musical, HAIR.

 

HAIR is a celebration of the 1960s and the counter-culture which heralded a lifestyle of peace and love. The show is a love letter to freedom, and a passionate cry for hope and change that still resonates today. The lively musical was full of show stopping tunes that began with the opening number "Aquarius", and continued with "Hair" and the finale of "Let the Sun Shine In", which allowed audience members to dance and sing along on stage.

Alumni Raising Funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

JANUARY 19 - New York, NY

Melody Garcia, a member of the SU Alumni group and graduate from Syracuse University's School of Information Studies May 2007 (BSc) and May 2008 (MSc) is participating in the Team-In-Training program for the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Along with raising funds for this cause, Melody is also training for the New Jersey Triathlon held on May 8, 2010.  If you would like to support her efforts, please make a donation to her fundraising campaign which will contribute to saving lives.

Syracuse Alumni Warm Up the Holiday Season


On Dec.12, Orange alumni warmed up the holiday season at New York City’s Swift bar by attending the second annual Big Apple Orange holiday party. Over 50 alumni enjoyed a night of reminiscing about the snowy days on the hill while enjoying traditional Irish food, festive drinks, and live music. The first 20 alumni that arrived were greeted with a free drink.
